The Volvo XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge will Become the EX40 and EC40
March 12 2024,
Embracing a future of fully electric mobility, Volvo Cars is reshaping its model nomenclature to streamline and standardize names for its electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge will be reborn as the EX40 and EC40, harmonizing effortlessly with the EX30 and EX90 within the new electric fleet. Of course, the gasoline-powered XC40 will remain, and it will keep its original name.
In tandem with this rebranding, Volvo is bidding farewell to the 'Recharge' badging on its plug-in hybrid models. Instead, these hybrids will be distinguished by the T6 or T8 suffixes, signifying varying power outputs. The new nomenclature aims to simplify the customer experience by removing the confusion that existed due to the Recharge name previously being used on both fully electric and plug-in hybrid models.
Complementing these changes, Volvo is introducing a Performance software pack for the EX40 and EC40 Twin Motor variants. Elevating the power output by 34 horsepower for enhanced acceleration, this pack also includes unique pedal mapping for swift accelerator response and introduces a dedicated 'Performance' drive mode which unlocks the full potential of 436 horsepower. This upgrade will be available at purchase for 2025 models and through an over-the-air update for 2024 versions.
The regular mild-hybrid powertrains haven’t been neglected either, since the B5 engine used in the XC60 and the XC90 will receive tweaks that aim to reduce emissions and fuel consumption, improving efficiency by up to 4% in the brand’s most popular model.
Moreover, Volvo is introducing a Black Edition for the EX40, EC40 and XC40, following the success of the XC60 Black Edition. Adorned with Onyx Black paint, high gloss black badging, and 20-inch five-spoke alloys in high gloss black, these models offer a choice between Microtech or textile charcoal interiors, for a more dynamic and modern look.
In summary, Volvo's strategic realignment not only underscores its commitment to electric mobility but also ensures clarity for potential buyers, as they navigate through an evolving landscape of fully electric and hybrid options. With these innovations, Volvo continues to drive the future of sustainable and performance-oriented automotive experiences.
